It can also be gentler on the body than some land-based activities. However, not every dog is comfortable or safe in water, so proper supervision and introduction are important.
One reason swimming is interesting from a fitness perspective is buoyancy. Water supports part of a dog's body weight, reducing the amount of force placed on the limbs compared with weight-bearing movement on land. At the same time, water resistance makes each paddling movement harder than moving through air.
That combination can create a useful form of exercise. A dog can work its limbs against resistance while experiencing less impact on weight-bearing joints. This is one reason controlled aquatic exercise is sometimes included in canine rehabilitation programs, particularly when a veterinary rehabilitation professional believes it fits the dog's condition and recovery stage.
However, "low impact" does not mean "effortless." A dog that swims continuously can become tired surprisingly quickly. Sessions should therefore be adjusted according to the dog's fitness, age, medical condition, swimming ability, and response during the activity.
During swimming, dogs coordinate their front and rear limbs while using their trunk muscles to maintain body position. Repeated paddling can provide whole-body muscular activity that differs from ordinary walking.
The resistance of the water also means that movement can be performed at a slower pace while still requiring muscular effort. For a healthy dog, this can complement other forms of exercise rather than replace them. Walking, controlled play, and other land-based activities remain important because they provide weight-bearing movement that swimming does not.
For dogs involved in rehabilitation, aquatic exercise may also be carefully structured to encourage particular movements. The goal is not simply to make the dog swim for as long as possible. Veterinary rehabilitation professionals can adjust the duration, water depth, pace, and type of exercise according to the individual dog's needs.
Swimming is often associated with dogs experiencing arthritis or other mobility concerns because water can reduce weight-bearing demands. The reduced loading may allow some dogs to move more comfortably than they would during certain land exercises.
That does not mean swimming is a universal treatment for joint disease. Dogs with painful conditions, recent surgery, neurological problems, heart or respiratory disease, or other medical concerns should be assessed by a veterinarian before beginning an aquatic exercise program.
For rehabilitation patients, the setting can also make a major difference. A professionally managed canine therapy pool or underwater treadmill allows exercise to be monitored more closely than simply sending a dog into open water.
A swimming session can also introduce a dog to a different sensory environment. Water changes the way the body moves, alters familiar sounds, and creates new challenges involving balance and coordination. For dogs that genuinely enjoy water, this novelty can make exercise more engaging.
Retrieving a floating toy, following a handler along the pool edge, or calmly entering and exiting the water can turn a physical session into an activity that also requires attention. Still, enjoyment should never be assumed. Some dogs become frightened when their feet leave the ground. Forcing a nervous dog into water can create fear rather than confidence. Positive, gradual introductions are much more appropriate.
The popular image of every dog instinctively knowing how to swim is misleading. Body structure can strongly influence swimming ability. Dogs with broad chests, short legs, flat faces, or heavy bodies may have more difficulty keeping their nose and mouth safely above the water.
Even dogs from breeds commonly associated with water can become exhausted or disoriented. A dog may also swim well in a controlled pool but struggle in a lake, river, or ocean because currents, waves, cold temperatures, and unfamiliar entry points introduce additional hazards.
A properly fitted canine life jacket with a handle can provide extra support, particularly during boating, open-water activities, or when a dog is still learning. It should supplement supervision, not replace it.
A safe swimming routine begins with the environment. The water should be clean and appropriate for dogs, while the entry and exit points should be easy for the dog to recognize and use. In a pool, teaching a dog where the exit is located can be just as important as teaching the dog how to paddle.
Constant supervision is essential. Never assume that a dog can safely remain in water simply because it has successfully completed previous swims. Fatigue can develop quickly, especially during enthusiastic retrieving games. Afterward, rinse the coat if necessary, dry the dog thoroughly, and pay attention to the ears and skin. Dogs that repeatedly swim may need particular attention to moisture around the ears, especially if they are prone to ear problems.
The best swimming program is not the longest one. It is the one that matches the individual dog's abilities and health needs. A young, energetic dog may tolerate a different session from a senior dog recovering from an orthopedic problem. A confident retriever may need different supervision from a short-muzzled breed that struggles to keep its face comfortably above water.
